Coping with disaster

There is a tomorrow after a disaster, and it’s sometimes hard to remember that in the midst of it. Sheri Fink It’s difficult to watch news footage of the current conditions in Puerto Rico without experiencing some emotion. I feel great empathy for the residents there and wonder how some are able to cope. Before Hurricane Maria, everything was routine and people were going about their lives as usual. Then their world was turned upside down, with widespread damage, no power, and limited supplies — and no idea when to expect repairs or aid. Some lost their lives. Many more …

And they lived happily ever after

Nothing’s ever easy as long as you go on living. Marilyn Monroe 1926 - 1962 Most of us grew up learning from fairy tales; Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, and The Gingerbread Man are just a few of the stories we heard as children. They tended to have happy endings, with the traditional closing line being “And they lived happily ever after.” While fairy tales are certainly a valuable teaching tool, I think our society has come to expect that life will actually turn out like the fairy tales: that there will come a point when we overcome our struggles and …

Fighting moles

There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.
